THE BALTIISKY (BALTIC) RAILWAY STATION
The Baltiisky (Baltic) railway station was built in the year 1855 when the railroad running from Petersburg to Peterhof was being constructed, and therefore it initially was called Peterhofsky. Trains started departing from the Baltic railway station and arriving there from July, 1857. Beginning with the year 1872, trains started running not only to Peterhof, but also to Tallinn.
In the 30s of the last century the Baltic railway station was reconstructed: the main entrance was built in place of three-arc windows. In 1955 an outhouse as a ground-based vestibule of the Metro station Baltiiskaya was added to the left wing of the building of the Baltic railway station. Perhaps, the most interesting detail in the building of the Baltic railway station is the Pavel Bure clock installed in the stained-glass window of the façade: it still functions and has shown the exact time for more than three hundred years.
At present the Baltic railway station is the only railway station in St. Petersburg from which depart and at which arrive only local trains. Long-distance trains do not depart from this station. One can go in the direction of Luga, Kalisch, Petrodvorets, Oranienbaum, Strelna and Gatchina from the Baltic railway station.
