THE MOSKOVSKY (MOSCOW) RAILWAY STATION
The building of the Moskovsky (Moscow) railway station was constructed in 1851. Initially it was named Nikolaevsky. Only 80 years later it was renamed Moskovsky. The decision about the construction of the Moscovsky railway station in St. Petersburg (as well as of its brother the Leningradsky railway station in Moscow) was made after Nikolay I had signed the decree about the construction of a railroad between Petersburg and Moscow.
The regular travels of Petersburg citizens to Moscow and back by the railroad began on the 1st of November, 1851. At first it was very expensive and difficult. So that to go to Moscow by train, one had to submit an application to the police and to enclose his passport with it. A potential passenger was thoroughly checked up, and only after this he was given a ticket. But his passport was given back only after he had arrived at the place of destination. Moreover, not very rich persons had to go to Moscow on trucks and in goods wagons.
At present time the Moscow railway station is a large-scale railway terminal in our country. Trains to Moscow, Ural, the Black sea coast of the Caucasus, Crimea, the Volga region, the South of Russia depart from the railway station. You can get to almost any place of our country from there. Trains from Moscow, Adler, Sevastopol, Baku and many other cities arrive at the railway station.
A passenger waiting for his train to arrive will always find something to occupy himself with at the Moscow railway station. The territory of it contains a huge quantity of high-tech-style pavilions, big shops, cigarette and news-stands, and rather cozy cafes. At the railway station you can buy a book or a souvenir to remind you of the city, beginning with a trinket, and ending with a photographic camera.
At call of the persons who would like to divert themselves there is a service-center where one can use the Internet, satellite connection, intercity and international telephone. And surely there is hardly a person who leaves the Moscow railway station being hungry. You will find a bistro, a pancake café, a grille-bar, a pizzeria and a café there. Apart from the abovementioned things, there are a foreign exchange office and a drugstore in the building of the railway station.
