THE VITEBSKY (VITEBSK) RAILWAY STATION
The Vitebsky (Vitebsk) railway station is one of the most important transport nodal points of St. Petersburg and the oldest railway station in the city. In fact, it is the first railway station in our country. There is even a model of the train which was the first to make scheduled railway run in our country.
The Vitebsk railway station has existed for over 150 years, and for the period of time it managed to change its appearance almost totally several times, and at the same time it grew in importance. Initially the Vitebsk railway station was called Tsarskoselsky, the same as the railroad which it serviced. The station presented a simple wooden building at that time. There was only one direction of trains from the place from Petersburg to Tsarskoe Selo. With the course of time the modest wooden railway station has been turned into an imposing wooden modern- style building. The railway station was renamed Vitebsky and began servicing a great deal of new directions: trains ran even to Odessa from there.
The early history of the Vitebsk railway station is connected with many funny facts. Notwithstanding the very modest initial appearance, the railway station became a popular place with residents of the city very quickly. A lot of people came there even if they were not going to a place they just wanted to gape at the arrival of a wonder-machine steam-engine. This arrival was usually followed by a loud signal whistle which frightened the living daylights out of the curious citizens who had not used to this technical miracle. As a result, the signal whistles on steam-engines were substituted for small organs so that not to scare the citizens. As a result, every arrival of a train to the platform was similar to a short-term concert in a way.
At present long-distance trains depart from the Vitebsk railway station in the direction of Belorussia, Ukraine and the Baltic States; and you can go up to Novgorod by an electric train from the railway station. The Vitebsk railway station is situated near the subway station Pushkinskaya.
The Vitebsk railway station is the only station in St. Petersburg which has its platform on the level of the first floor.
